Aims and Objective of this project
To support the ex-students to become the independent and productive members of the society through various programmes in education and empowerment
The Need for this project
The percentage of school dropouts of students integrated into mainstream schools has always been a cause for concern at SEC. This high rate of dropouts is essentially due to lack of infrastructure for mobility in mainstream schools, as also the lack of facilities to look into the special needs of the students with disabilities.
About the Program
The vocational department focuses on creating a livelihood for students with severe disabilities. The school provides training to make paper bags, gift envelopes, flowers, ‘toran’, bead work, candles, etc. This is done with an objective to provide them skills for a home based business opportunity.
Conversational English classes
As English is not a language spoken in the homes of the students, SEC tries to impart knowledge with regard to conversational English. In today’s world conversational English is a necessity and it builds confidence. The objective of the classes is not only to benefit the students in communication skills at the school, but also in future at their work place.
SEC educates students up to the 7th standard and encourage them to continue their education in regular mainstream schools thereafter. Due to lack of infrastructure and special need requirements in regular schools, many students drop outs and do not complete their education.
A. National Institute Open Schooling (10th Standard) (NIOS)
The ex students who attend the Vocational Training Centre at Antophill are enrolled for NIOS to appear for the 10th grade examinations. Specialized coaching in all the subjects is imparted to the students, because of which many of them have been able to clear the 10th Grade.
B. Yeshwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU)
The ex-students who are capable to cope up with the syllabus pertaining to the graduation level, are admitted to the YCMOU, which is an open university offering various courses for graduation level.
The ex-students are encouraged to appear for the preparatory exam conducted by YCMOU twice a year. If the student passes this preparatory exam it qualifies them to take admission in different graduation level course offered by YCMOU.
Computer Hardware training:
Some years ago the ex-students department at SEC started with Computer Hardware training programme at the Vocational Training Centre at Antop Hill. The Objective of imparting hardware training to the individual with disabilities has been achieved to a great extent. However, it is the grit and determination of the students to strive and overcome every challenge that has made the programme successful. The students are not only capable of assembling a computer, but can also rectify faults that arise in the computer.
Computer Software training:
In today’s competitive world it is essential that every person who needs employment whether it is self employment or elsewhere, without the knowledge of computer operating skills, one cannot progress.
A special computer laboratory has been developed at the Antop Hill Unit where all the ex-students attending the Vocational Training learn basic computer skills from a qualified instructor.
